part 3 evaluation

my achievements:

I think that thanks to part 3 I feel more confident with photography and typography. I think that I used a lot of research as a start and copied a lot from another artist. However, that experience helped to enhance my basic skills in that industry and pushed me forward to experiment.

my plans:

I have learned that reading and doing research can help a lot. For instance, thanks to Salvador Dali's biography helped to create a photoshoot with an apple.  Moreover, I think that I have to know many artworks, styles, and works to create something new and to have great inspiration. I want to read a few books about the history of art and design throughout the summer. Also, I want to enhance my skills in photography and Indesign, Photoshop. I feel that it is big and useful plans. Let them begin.

PUBLICATION DESIGN

advantages:

I like the interaction part(cutouts). Moreover, I feel the success of the typography and photos balance. I think that the photos were successful and very different. It was challenging to have them all together in one publication. However, I feel that I achieved that. Also, the chapters make the viewer not so annoyed and it allows me to have a lot of pages.

 disadvantages:

I am still not very satisfied with my typography. I think that I should experiment more but not with that project because I am afraid to ruin what I already have. Moreover, the book is very difficult to print out properly because of cutouts.

It was very difficult to make a printed version of a book. I needed to stick the pages perfectly because otherwise, the cutout concept stoped working. Moreover, I do not have 2 side printer. I decided that it is going to be much easier to glue to pages together. So, I will need to try after the quarantine will the 2 side print work.

Moreover, I want to try half matt paper. I do not want to make my publication glossy.

How will I present it?

I decided to put all my publications into the mockup. I think it is the neatest way of how my work could be presented. If I could I would have printed out the publication in a high-quality print and after I would have made a set design photo. However, making mockups makes the process easier.

Do I like the result?

I like the result which I have got. It looks digitally well made. However, I do not allow me to show the interactive pages and cutouts. With these mockups, the viewer can not feel the whole atmosphere of the publication.

Why the interaction is so important?

I think that when the viewer has an opportunity to engage with the product(publication) then he will have more memories about it. The product will have more influence on the audience

trough the last few weeks I was trying to enhance my publication. I have added some pages with which I did not feel confident. Moreover, I had a few more photo sessions. For instance, I was inspired by Salvador Dali when I did one with apples. I went wild and did just something. The initial idea was to colour bubbles.

All in all, I like what I have produced. I think that it was a very big work. Although I am not satisfied with the graphics, I love photos. I think that my skills in that field developed through the third part.

Moreover, I think that I answered the brief and produced my own salvation of imperfection problem.

Moreover, I have tried to think of other ideas that could work for my project. I came up with a few moving images. A stop motion.  One idea was to create a clay movie which will show that nothing is perfect. That one object could easily transfer to another. However, I am not sure that the viewer will be able to guess the subject.

Another idea was to cover my face with different opinions till I will all become black. However. I think that there was one artist that has already done something similar.

pinhole camera

Why did I want to create it?

Firstly, because all the results which were done with that type of camera seemed very unusual. Moreover, you can not predict will you have a good result or not when you are using a photo film. You do not control everything ad half of your success depends on the camera. So, the pinhole camera would give the most unpredictable and mysterious result.

Why it did not go well?

I read about that camera from the book about photography. At first sight, it seemed to me to be done easily. However, when I started to do that it was not as easy as I expected. The reason for that that I did not have all materials that I needed(matchbox and black tape). I decided to replace them and create a box by myself and use glue instead of tape. It took me a lot of time to create a box in the right way.

Another problem was to put the beginning of the photo film into the empty box. Actually, I was not able to do that because I needed a small piece of the already used photo film to do that but I have not had one. That is why I decided to leave that idea and finish it a bit later.

What did I want to do with it?

I wanted to take shots of money and other objects for the first time. I thought that such simple and at the same time complicated photos would be a good addition to my photo illustrations.

size

I thought about doing each chapter different sizes(each chapter minus a few cm). The biggest size will be A4

feedback

Was it useful?

The feedback was very useful because it helped me to enhance my publication design. Before that moment I had not understood where was the mistake and I was not confident about my work.

What did I change?

Firstly, I decided to use only one font for the all publication. It helps to bring all chapters together. Moreover, I created shapes from the text which helped me to make the typography more interesting. Moreover, I understood that putting the image on the whole spread is not the strongest approach

26.03

Why I have decided to work with a photo film?

Photo film cameras have always associated with something old and secret. I always wanted to involve with it to be the part of that secret. Moreover, the result could become part of something old despite the fact that the shot was taken nowadays.

What are the possibilities of the photo film?

What are the specific quality?

The main difference is the grain which appears on the film photos. It reduces the texture and gives a lot of noise. However, it creates a special atmosphere in the photo. Moreover, you can

How can that medium help to communicate with the imperfection topic?

23.03

Today I had a photoshoot day. The model was my brother. Actually, he is 12 years old and it was very difficult to capture his attention for the period of time which I always use for the photoshoot. Moreover, it was very difficult to make him do what exactly I wanted.

13.03

-Was it difficult to work with the model?

It was very difficult to work with Benz. I asked him to help me with a project but he does not enjoy being a model. Every composition he counted up to 10 and then said to me that he is bored and asked to change the composition. It was very difficult because I needed time to concentrate and find the best angle.

-Did I enjoy the result?

I love photos with unexpected composition. I am talking about flowers in the sink with blood. I did not expect it to be like that.

-How can I use these photos?

I think I can successfully use a glass as an optimist/pessimist illustration. Moreover, I can use the photos with a magazine for the physical confidence.

BOARD GAME DESIGN

21.03

What were the achievements?

Today I created the second chapter for my book. I tried to do that chapter more interactive. That is why I decided to make some pages cut and transparent.

What should I develop?

I think I have to make some pages 3D and make some objects which people will need to pull take out. Moreover, I want to enhance my typography. However, I do not know in which way

5.03 crit

-What was the feedback?

-Go to the exhibition "Play well"

-Add a sort of pictogramme underneath the card

-take photos of user test

-look at other game designs

-add more details to the time planner

4.03

-How was the brainstorm?

Actually, this time it was really easy to understand what I want to focus on. I think that the reason was that I wanted to try interaction and I did it. But I was not satisfied with the result. Creating a game was a good salvation for that problem.

-what is the idea for that week?

My purpose is to create a game that is going to help people to raise their self-confidence. I thought about concentrating on the optimist/pessimist subjects. In my opinion, becoming an optimist is one way to believe in yourself. Moreover, that game should be fun. It should be a sort of a game for party night rather than the game for the lesson. Also, I want to concentrate on design and typography more. I think that creating a board game will allow me to do that.

Besides that, I want to have one more photoshoot in the library for the imperfections portraits.

4.03

Photoshoot Isseya

-Was it easy to work with a model?

That time I decided to find references before photoshoot. What I mean is that I have found photos where would be something similar to what I want to see as my result. For instance, I have found photos from a library with different poses. When we came with a model to a place I have shown a photo with a pose. The model's task was just to repeat it. That way is much easier to work that just explaining with words what do I want to do, especially when the model is not a professional.

-What were the difficulties?

The model did not feel always comfortable. That is why she could not do the most natural pose. I think that is the most difficult part. To make the model feel comfortable. Otherwise, I will not receive any effort from a model to change the pose.

-Am I satisfied with the result?

I am satisfied with the photo of the hands because of the light and because the hand looks very beautiful. The secret is to try to put the hand not straight but with an angle on the photo. However, I would loke to reshoot some photos because I know how `i want to enhance them. For instance, there is one photo where the model is hanging from the chair. The viewer can see how it was difficult for the model. However, he does not need to see it. I should put something under the head of the model.

S I T E

2.03

Was it difficult to take photos?

I do not have enough experience. So, my photoshoot is more about exploration. I have tried different locations, angles, and exposures to get the best results. Because of the cold weather, it was very cold to take photos because I wanted to take them from the ground. Moreover, it is important to look at the forecast. The photos are not very good when it is cloudy. Moreover, I got very interesting results because of the wind.

1.03

was it difficult to Interact?

It took me about an hour to get used to the space around me and feel self-confident. I was really afraid to hear "no" from people. All in all, firstly I tried to ask people to write their imperfections on the vase in the Barbican center. Most of them refused to do that. However, when I went out to the Lake district most people agreed to take part in my project. I think because outside people wanted to relax, whether inside a lot of people were just working and did not wanted to be disturbed. Moreover, a lot of people came to see the exhibition. So, they were into the arts. When I said that my project is about the art they were happy to help me.

How did the space work?

I think that relaxing atmosphere worked very well with the concept and the vase, Moreover, it was very sunny and I was able to get great photos. A lot of green space gave me the opportunity to put my idea into life.

Was the exhibition helpful?

The Masculinity exhibition was very interesting because of the different photos. It is a very big exhibition where everyone can find something useful as research. I found a few great photos which I can use for my photoshoot.

What was the outcome?

My outcome is the vase with cracks fully covered with the imperfections sighs written by people. These photos could be used as an illustration of the text in the magazine

28.02 tutorial

 -To read more about Wabi-Sabi

-Why nature is used? Whi conservatory? What is the reason?

-What is the process of redoing the object? Which object?

-Maybe take just the idea of Wabi-Sabi?

27.02

What did I found out of research?

The research which I have done was very helpful. I have found out about wabi-Sabi. It is a japanize concept which is the direct answer to my question in the project: nothing is perfect. I have found out the design Wabi-Sabi which is about breaking the object and redoing it. I though that it is going to be a good part of my one week project.

What did I found from the book?

Moreover, I started to read a book about self-confidence.

26.02

How did the brainstorm go?

It was very difficult to understand what I want to do. the reason for that is that the project was very broad. it could be understood in different ways. Moreover, I felt that my subject is a bit difficult and that I do not know a lot about how to solve the problem of my project. Also, the class did not help me a lot. So, basically I am doing the project on my own. It is very difficult. Especially for the first time.

25.02

what was useful in the Commune crit?

Actually, it was unuseful. Of course, it was very interesting to listen to the project that others have done. However, I did not get any critique of my work. I would love to hear the tutor's opinion.

How did I feel about the new project?

At first, I did not get what we had to do. The place where we had to do(Barbican) was absolutely clear. However, all were very confused about what they had to do as a project. Literally, the project is about doing something in Barbican.

Did the task help?

The drawing task was unhelpful. We analyzed and did the drawing task in a completely different place from our project. Instead of that, I would rather do a brainstorm for my project.

PROPOSAL+SUBJECT

draft section 3

-what are the main types of evaluation?

peer evaluation

self-evaluation

tutor feedback

user testing

-How will you use these different forms of evaluation each week and timetable them into your weekly process?

Each suggestion have to be heard. Not each has to be applied but at least it is good to experiment and to see whether that suggestion was good or bad. There are 4 types of different evaluation processes. I can spend one day on each one.

-How will you go about defining and testing the success of your work as an ongoing part of your process?

The purpose is to have beautiful work that communicates well. The success will be then when I achieve all those parts. And after achieving all these i can ask for an advice to improve what I have.

Draft section 1

-What were the different ways you were asked to work for 6 the part 2 projects and the different skills introduced?

In part 2 during 6 projects we worked with

-film

-set

-photo

-publication(typography, printing)

-interaction(installation, performance)

skills:

-time-managing(purpose: to work within a certain time)

-work with a model or a self-portrait

-building and crafting skills

-filming

-working in Adobe photoshop, InDesign, PremierPro

-making a photo, lighting

-interact

-Which methods or working were most suited to your interests and abilities?

taking photos, working with typography, creating a publication

-What did you learn about your own creative process and visual language from the 6 projects and different ways of working?

That I am afraid to work with models. That I try to be within time and talk about the subjects which are important. I enjoy creating a concept. The appearance of the work and clearance of it bothers me the most. I like to express my self through photography.

-How did the context of the work change the way it engages an audience?

In the Interact project, we engaged people with interacting. The same was with publication. Other people had to watch and to understand the meaning.

-What were the different notions of aims and success that you applied to your work?

I have tried in each work to produce a beautiful result with a meaning inside of it. I am not sure that I succeeded to communicate correctly with people everywhere. However, it was the purpose. Sometimes it is easier to make the meaning not os deep if you want to be understood.

30.01

What did I like?

The most memorable task was with ropes and paper airplanes. Such a task is about team building and it is really helpful for those who did not know each other well but still need to be in a group and communicate with each other.

Was it easy to communicate?

I did not know well people well. Moreover, it was stressful in the beginning because I did not know with whom I will be in a group. What I have understood after having a small chat in a group that three of us are completely different. It will be difficult to find common interests. However, will see how it will end up.

What was the result?

It was very difficult to decide with the place where we wanted to go. Everyone wanted to a different place. However, after spending a few hours we decided to go to the farm which is 4 hours away from London and stay together in a small room.

final evaluation

I think that I would love to work on my publication more because I do not feel that it id perfectly done. I want to redo some pages and make two more chapters. One full of typography and one base on my previous outcomes about Wabi-Sabi. So, I can add the illustrations to the book.

Subject

Imperfections could be not only in appearance but also in the character. Moreover, people are more concerned about themselves as a person and a character. So, there are a lot of artworks about the physical imperfection but not a lot about the character. I want to try to focus on that.

I thought about the initial start of the imperfection. Why do people think so? I think the first is that do not believe in themselves. Their self-confidence is not on the lever where it should be. Why? Because their parents said something which is stuck in their mind, because something was unsuccessful, because they are afraid, etc.

To understand all ins and outs I decided to read a book named "Confidence kit" by C.Foran where are explained all the possibilities of the existence of low self-confidence. I thought that the book will be a good material and start for the plot for my book.

Actually, I decided to use her words for my book and create illustrations and designs for them.

live photography

Why live photography and not modeling?

During the quarantine, I can not choose who do I want to photography. Generally speaking, I am staying with my family and they are all not models. Moreover, they are not really engaged into modelling if I ask. So, I decided that live photos will be a great solution. Like that, I still can get good photos, I still can practise and for my family, it will not be so annoying to pose.

What were the difficulties?

The difficulties were to catch a beautiful and interesting moment and to make a proper shot(with the best angle and not smooth). Moreover, I did not have a chance in the second photo because people are moving around. Actually, I think that it is a good practice for me as a photographer.

What are the secrets?

The secrets are in the monochrome and grain. These two aspects can make the photo much better especially when it is live photography. Firstly, monochrome helps to bring all colours together. The understanding that during the photoshoot I can concentrate on the composition and not on the colours help a lot. Moreover, I am obsessed with live photography made on photo film. However, I do not have an opportunity to do thousands of shots on a photo film and I can not see immediately the result. However, I enjoy taking photos on a normal camera and then edit a bot more grain, make the photo more yellow and green and produce the result which looks like a shot made on an old camera.

What are the plans?

I do not think that I am successful in that field. I feel that I have to practice more to get better result.

I would love to hear from you your opinion on my two chapters in my publications.

During that time I realized that I wat to create a strong piece using text and typography. However, I do not how. I have tried to create one piece in the second chapter. However, I am not satisfied with that. What would you suggest for me? How can I enhance it?  Maybe you can suggest some practitioners to look at?

That week was very difficult for me because of my illness. So, I was not able to complete all that I wanted.

Due to that fact I want to catch up and finish the design of my publication during the Easter break

I managed to fo home and I am currently in Russia on self-isolation.

As for my project, I am working on a publication. I want to create a publication that will help people to raise their self-confidence. Moreover, I am having photoshoots. Already for two weeks, I have been asking people about their imperfections and then I have been trying to show it through a photograph.

I would love to hear from you your opinion about the design of a first chapter, especially the page with a number and a text near to it. I am thinking about doing each chapter in that style but with a different color. Will such approach(dividing into chapters and make the introduction to these chapters in one design)  help me to gather all my photos from a photoshoot together in one publication or should I think about something else that could make these different photos in common? What do you think about the design?

24.03

What were the difficulties and achievements?

Today I for the first time in my life developed the film. Actually, I realized that it is much more difficult to get a good result with a photo film camera. I do not understand why sometimes are photos faded and why sometimes not.

What do I want next?

I would love to know how to enhance my skills in taking photos on a film. Moreover, I want to do a whole project shot on a photo film.

18.03

What was the most difficult about gathering information?

I have gathered together the information which I have read out of Caroline Foran's book. I decided to make a book with quotations out of that literature. I have not read the book yet, but still, I had bought information. It was very difficult to underline the most important and to understand how do I want to arrange that text in my publication.

Was it difficult to design one of the parts of publication?

The most difficult question for me How to combine all different illustrations into one book? I decided to make chapters and give each chapter a colour in which the illustration is going to be. For instance, today I have made part of the book about fear. I have made it red.

What are further plans?

I want to finish the book and continue working on photos and chapters. What If I do one photoshoot and two chapters per week?

10.03 printing

It was very difficult to make the cards in the exact places. The printing was double-sided. So, I needed to make both sides match on both pages. I had to reprint twice my outcome to have a perfect match.

Interestingly, printing in ABC imaging is much cheaper, faster than at CSM digital printing room.

8.03

-box preparation

At first, I had the idea to print the box with a printing room. However, most of the typography companies refused to do that. So, I decided to do it by myself. I made a box in the shape of the cub because my game is about optimist/pessimist(the glass is half full or empty?). However, the box which I have made is not the best quality. But I do not know how to fix it. I should try other variants.

9.03

-Was it difficult to create cards?

It was difficult to decide which design I wanted to have for the cards. I think that not knowing how to use photoshop was one of the reasons. All in all, some Youtube workshops helped me to create a design with which I was satisfied. Creating a big amount of the cards was not hard but took a lot of time.

The most difficult was to create a concept of the game.

-How was the user testing?

The initial idea was to make just one rule: find 3 positive things about a bad situation. However, after a testing user I understood that it was a bit boring. So, I decided to make 3 different tasks. It was very difficult to make cards which could fit for all three tasks. However, I solved that problem.

3.03 crit

What was the feedback?

-To think more about the physical outcome

-These photos could be used as illustrations to the magazine

-I can develop that interaction

The description

What is the subject of the project? What does it evoke?

Encourage people to love themselves.

What is the relationship of the space to the subject?

I have used the conservatory because there is a lot of nature, plants. Wabi-Sabi is about using natural materials, not artificial.

What is the context of the work?

Through interaction show that imperfections are what make us perfect and unique.

Who is the work communicating to?

To the viewers who are asked to write their imperfection on the vase.

why does the work matter?

Because nowadays people have to think about themselves and they have to value themselves.

Analysis

Advantages:

I have used interaction as a medium. It was successful because people were engaged in analyzing themselves.

Disadvantages:

I think that it is possible to push forward the result. I do not feel that the vase was a good object for communication.

Site project

-How can you effectively analyze a site and identify ways you might work there?

-analyze people(age), the number of people passing by,  is the work could be seen from a long distance,  the sounds, the weather, how much space do I have

-what type of information do you need to collect?

people's imperfections, what is perfect

-How can you collect/record that information in a range of different ways?

photo,video, voice record

6.01

Tutorial

Initially, my subject was very broad and common. "How to turn imperfections into perfections". A lot of works are made uppon that subject nowadays. A  lot of brands use plus-size, gay models in their advertisings. It would be very difficult to create something new in that field.

Feedback

-What if trying to do the book about the subject which is very difficult to visualize?

- Look at Melanie Manchot, Aliz Marie, The elephant man, Jenny Selline, Jillian Wearing, Olardur Elassion, Juno Calypso, RuPaul's drag race- Netflix, Pardo. Another kind of life

-narrow down the subject(choose more specific audience)

-use the mirror in the experiments

-we show ourselves in the toilet. A toiles as a 'self-perception place'

-politicians imperfections

-caricatures

Interview

Out of the interview, I understood that most of the people are interested in their personality rather than in the body.  We can have complexes about our character too. I think that it is a good subject to think about. What if I encourage people to understand that the imperfections of their character will make then unique?
